The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has expanded its AI-based traffic camera network to 19 key intersections across the capital, with 4 new cameras installed on Tuesday, DMP Commissioner Musleh Uddin Ahmed said.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating an AI traffic camera at Lake Road under the Tejgaon Traffic Division, the commissioner said the technology would gradually be extended to other important intersections across the city.
He said around 1,500 traffic cases have so far been filed using AI-enabled cameras.
As fines vary depending on the nature of the offence, updated information on the total amount collected is available with the DMP Traffic Division.
Regarding AI-based traffic enforcement, the commissioner said notices are sent not only via text message but also by post to the registered owners of vehicles found violating traffic laws.
SMS notifications are issued from designated DMP Traffic Division numbers, while details of the offences are also published on the DMP Traffic Portal and website.
Responding to a question about prosecution notices being sent to previous owners when vehicle ownership has not been officially transferred following a sale, he said around 38,000 summons had so far been issued.
On the issue of battery-operated auto-rickshaws, the commissioner said drives against such vehicles were continuing, although it was not possible to remove all of them from Dhaka's roads immediately.
He said the Ministry of Home Affairs and the DMP had taken a policy decision regarding battery-operated auto-rickshaws and were working with relevant stakeholders to implement it.
Necessary measures would be introduced gradually in line with a coordinated decision, he added.
Earlier, while inaugurating the AI camera, the commissioner said the devices had been installed at key intersections and accident-prone locations to improve traffic management and enhance road safety.
"As a result, there has been unprecedented and visible improvement in traffic management. It has created a positive tendency among drivers to remain within designated lanes and comply with traffic signals," he said.
He added that the combination of traffic diversions and modern traffic signals was laying the foundation for transforming Dhaka into a modern, smart city.
"We are committed to maintaining this momentum and have adopted stricter, technology-driven measures to enforce traffic laws," he said.
