The Convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), Nahid Islam, on Wednesday demanded the July Memorial Museum to be made open by August 5 this year.
He made these remarks after paying tribute to those killed in the July Uprising at the mass grave in Rayerbazar in the capital.
“Otherwise the people themselves will open it, and they will take measures to visit the museum,” Nahid said while briefing the reporters.
He demanded the swift prosecution of those responsible for the massacre, implementation of state reforms, and fulfillment of the promised assistance for the families of those killed and the injured.
Paying tribute to those killed in the 2024 mass uprising, Nahid Islam reiterated that commemorating the anniversary alone is insufficient and that the government must work to realize the movement's fundamental goals.
Nahid Islam said that the party respectfully remembers 1,400 people who were killed during the July Uprising, including Abu Sayeed, Mugdha, Wasim, Farhan, Faiyaz, Riya Gop, as well as more than 3,000 injured.
He said that although two years have passed since the July mass uprising, the people's expectation of a democratic and discrimination-free Bangladesh has still not been realized.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the sentence handed down to Hasanul Haq Inu by the International Crimes Tribunal, Nahid Islam said that a harsher punishment should have been imposed for his alleged role in assisting the July massacre. He urged the state to appeal the verdict.
Prior to the briefing, the NCP leaders offered prayers at the graves of the protesters killed during the Uprising, starting a 36-day campaign titled “July Awakening to Build the Nation.”
