The owner of a workshop in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj has completed the payment of Tk30 lakh in compensation to teenage worker Nayeem Hasan Nahid, whose right arm was severed while working there.

The matter was placed before the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, on Monday (July 6) by the minor's lawyer, Omar Faruk.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Omar said the workshop owner paid Tk15 lakh before the court today.

"Including today's payment, a total of Tk30 lakh has been handed over to the victim in three installments," he said.

According to the case details, on November 1, 2020, a national daily published a report titled "The Tragic Consequence of Child Labour in Bhairab," stating that 10-year-old Nahid lost his right arm after it was caught in a machine while working at a workshop in Bhairab.

In December 2020, Nahid's father, Anwar Hossain, filed a writ petition with the High Court, attaching the newspaper report and seeking an order for compensation.

On January 31, 2024, the High Court ordered that Tk15 lakh be paid by April that year and the remaining Tk15 lakh be deposited in a 10-year fixed deposit receipt (FDR) by December, bringing the total compensation to Tk30 lakh.

The court also directed that the child be paid Tk7,000 per month until he sits for his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.

The workshop owner later appealed the High Court verdict. On November 19, 2024, the Appellate Division upheld the High Court's judgment.
