3 to hang for rape, murder of 5-year-old girl in Mymensingh

A Mymensingh tribunal on Thursday sentenced three individuals to death for killing a five-year-old girl by throwing her into a river after raping her last month.

Judge of the Mymensingh Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Sudipta Sarkar handed down the verdict.

The condemned convicts are Arif, Rakib and Siam, all from Dhobaura upazila of the district. The tribunal also fined each of them Tk2 lakh.

Meanwhile, Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Mezbah Uddin Ahmed sentenced an underage boy, Maruf, 17, to 10 years’ imprisonment in the case.

The verdict was delivered within 25 days of the incident.

According to the prosecution, Nisa Moni, daughter of Taju Mia of Tangahati village in Dhobaura upazila, was raped by the convicts on 14 June. Later, her body was thrown into the river.

On 15 June, Taju Mia filed a case with Dhobaura Police Station in this regard. Police arrested the accused three days after the incident.

Police submitted a charge sheet against four people within nine days of the incident.

Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, the victim’s mother said, “If this verdict is executed swiftly, my daughter’s soul will finally be at peace. I pray that no other mother has to endure the loss of a child as I have.”
