A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking measures to prevent fatal violence, public suffering, and excessive noise pollution associated with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shafiqul Islam filed the writ on Thursday.

The petition names the Law Secretary, Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and other relevant officials as respondents.

The petition requests the court to issue a rule asking why the respondents' inaction should not be declared unlawful.

It also seeks directives to formulate guidelines regulating public screenings and celebrations, including the use of fireworks and loudspeakers.

Additionally, it requests orders to control illegal high-volume noise after 11:00 p.m. and to prohibit the use of fireworks during those hours.

Speaking about the petition, Shafiqul said that, according to a newspaper report, 10 people have died so far in incidents related to the World Cup.

Separately, the report mentions that another man died after being attacked by rival football supporters in Dhanpur area of Adarsha Sadar Upazila, Cumilla this week.

He also noted that people celebrate late into the night by setting off fireworks and playing loud music, which disturbs the sleep of children, the elderly, and the general public. This prompted him to file the writ.
