Govt deploys army in flood hit region

Staff Correspondent

The government on Friday deployed army in Chattogram under the "In Aid to Civil Power" to assist the civil administration in responding to the floods caused by heavy rainfall, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

“Following an urgent request from the Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram, the Bangladesh Army's 10th Infantry Division and 24th Infantry Division have been conducting search, rescue, and relief operations in several flood-affected upazilas”, according to an ISPR statement posted on Facebook.

Continuous heavy rainfall and runoff from the hills have severely inundated four upazilas of Chattogram—Lohagara, Satkania, Chandanaish, and Banshkhali. In response to this critical situation, the Bangladesh Army's 10th Infantry Division has urgently deployed rescue teams and the necessary equipment to the affected areas.

Heavy monsoon rains have also caused flooding in the upazilas of Boalkhali, Hathazari, and Fatikchhari. The 24th Infantry Division of the army has been deployed to these areas. The Division has already established three camps in those flood-affected areas.

The floods and landslides caused by incessant rain already claimed at least 39 lives in the region while around one million remained marooned.

The highest number of deaths was recorded in Cox's Bazar with 23, followed by Chattogram with 10, Bandarban with five, and Rangamati with one.

The fatalities include Rohingya refugees who were killed in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.
