Chinese engineering company CMEC Group will invest in a waste-to-energy power plant in Dhaka’s Aminbazar that is expected to generate 42.5 megawatts of electricity using around 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste a day, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The project was discussed at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday on two waste-to-energy projects planned for Dhaka.
Officials said the Aminbazar plant is expected to begin supplying electricity to the national grid by August 2028 and will generate power for the next 25 years.
The meeting was also told that South Korea's B&F Company will implement a waste management and power generation project at Matuail under the Dhaka South City Corporation.
The project will produce around 15,000 tonnes of methane gas annually, generating about 81,000 megawatt-hours of electricity a year, while also producing solar power, fertiliser, animal feed and eco-bricks.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the ministries of local government, power and environment to hold an inter-ministerial meeting to expedite implementation of the two projects.
He also stressed completing the projects on schedule and ensuring the use of environmentally friendly technologies.
