A wild female elephant that was seriously injured after falling around 200 feet from a hillside during persistent rainfall in Teknaf died while undergoing treatment on Sunday morning, despite efforts by forest officials and veterinarians to save it.

According to the Forest Department, the elephant died at around 9:45am after sustaining severe injuries.

The elephant fell from the steep hillside on Saturday afternoon while grazing on vines and leaves. Forest officials said it slipped on rain-soaked soil before plunging down the slope.

Following the incident, Forest Department personnel, accompanied by veterinarians from the Teknaf Upazila Livestock Veterinary Hospital, immediately began treating the injured animal. A specialised medical team was also deployed, while members of the Community Patrol Group (CPG) assisted in caring for the elephant.

Teknaf Range Officer Md Abdur Rashid confirmed the elephant died while receiving treatment.

Before its death, the elephant had reportedly been writhing in pain for several hours. Forest Department officials launched rescue and treatment efforts after receiving information from local residents.

Assistant Conservator of Forests for Teknaf and Ukhiya Md Monirul Islam had earlier said the elephant was unable to stand after the fall and was suspected to have been paralysed.

Teknaf Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Abul Kalam Azad had said the elephant was unable to move its two hind legs and had also sustained serious injuries to its abdomen. As it was stranded in a remote hilly area, it could not be relocated and was treated at the site.

Despite the emergency treatment and continuous care provided by forest officials and veterinary teams, the elephant succumbed to its injuries on Sunday morning.
