A nine-foot-long python that strayed from the Sundarbans into a village was rescued on Monday after getting trapped in a fishing net in Bagerhat.

The snake was found entangled in a net in KC Chalitabunia village of Morrelganj upazila. As an agitated crowd attempted to kill the python, a local wildlife enthusiast reached the scene and safely rescued it.

According to local residents, a farmer went to retrieve his fishing net from a canal on Monday morning and found the large python trapped inside. Hearing his cries, nearby residents rushed to the spot.

Shariful Islam, assistant conservator of forests and range officer of the Sharankhola Range under the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said the python was around nine feet long and weighed approximately 20 kilograms.

"The python had entered the locality after crossing a river from the Sundarbans. When local people saw it trapped in the net, they were preparing to kill it," he said.

A Forest Department team later reached the spot and took the python into their custody.

Shariful added that the snake is in good health and will be released into the deep forest of the Sundarbans this afternoon.
