Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Spokesperson Mahdi Amin on Saturday said the government has been working relentlessly, giving the highest priority to ensuring transparency, good governance, public welfare and fulfilling the people's expectations.
"The government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has completed only 150 days, or five months, in office. In terms of time, this may not seem very long. But for a democratic government, every single day is an opportunity to fulfil the commitments made to the people," he said at a press conference held at Karobi Hall of the PMO in the capital's Tejgaon on Saturday afternoon.
The Prime Minister's Press Wing organised the press conference to mark the completion of the government's first five months in office.
Mahdi, who also serves as an adviser to the Prime Minister, said, "Every moment is a test of responsibility and accountability, and every step is a new test of earning the people's trust."
The PMO spokesperson said, "We believe the confidence and trust of the people are the greatest strengths of any government. Therefore, we consider it our moral responsibility to keep the people informed about every initiative, every achievement, every reform and every challenge of the government."
He said that after assuming office through the direct mandate of the people, the government placed its highest priority on rebuilding democratic institutions and maintaining economic stability.
Measures to control commodity prices, restore discipline in the financial sector, recover laundered money, and ensure cost-effective and corruption-free reviews of development projects reflect the government's strong commitment to good governance, Mahdi said.
At the same time, he said, work is underway to rehabilitate recent flood victims and rebuild the damaged and looted health and education sectors.
"The government remains fully committed to building an inclusive, discrimination-free and prosperous Bangladesh based on the achievements made in a short period of five months," the PMO spokesperson said.
Describing the people as the ultimate judges of the government's performance, Mahdi said, "The trust, support and constructive opinions of the people are the government's greatest source of inspiration for the journey in the days coming ahead."
He said Tarique Rahman received the people's mandate to rebuild the collapsed state structure after bringing an end to prolonged fascist rule, adding that within a very short period of assuming office, the Prime Minister had earned the highest level of public confidence.
"Over the past five months, the five aspects of multidimensional achievements – the trust, love and support of the people, the protection of the interests of people from all walks of life in line with the election manifesto, the remarkable success in overcoming challenges within a short period, giving the highest priority to ensuring the people's freedom and protecting the country's sovereignty, and the Prime Minister's outstanding leadership – have opened a new chapter in the country's political history," the PMO spokesperson said.
At the beginning of his speech, Mahdi paid tribute to the martyrs of the July Uprising.
"Two years ago, at this very time, our beloved motherland witnessed a bloody chapter. To silence the voices of peaceful protesters demanding their legitimate rights, the fascist regime chose the path of killing through gunfire," he said, adding that the sacrifices of Abu Sayed in Rangpur, Wasim Akram in Chattogram, Farhan Faiyaz in Dhaka, and countless innocent students and ordinary people strengthened the movement.
The participation of people from all walks of life and democratic political parties transformed the movement into a mass uprising that ultimately succeeded in ousting the fascist regime, Mahdi said.
He said that the BNP, which he described as the political party that had suffered the highest number of enforced disappearances, killings, attacks, false cases and human rights violations over the past 16 years, later came to power through a free, fair and impartial election.
"We pay our deep respects to all the martyrs and pray to Almighty Allah for the eternal peace of their souls," the Prime Minister's adviser said.
