Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam yesterday both warned the government of confrontation if the July Charter remained unimplemented.
Addressing the 11-party alliance's divisional rally at Hemayet Uddin Eidgah Maidan in Barishal, Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman, also the opposition leader, said the party did not want to “remain on the streets”, but rather work together to build the country.
But the reluctance to work on the charter was pushing them to take the streets again.
The BNP had promised to implement every demand endorsed through the referendum if the majority voted in favour; but they have abandoned that commitment after assuming power."
He also accused the government of backtracking on its reform agenda, further questioning the legality of the parliamentary constitutional amendment committee.
"You keep lying at every step. Be prepared for the consequences," he said.
Shafiqur also said the government was trying to downplay the significance of the July Uprising. "We will not allow 2024 to be erased," he said.
Meanwhile, at the rally, NCP Convener Nahid Islam warned of another uprising if the July Charter was not implemented.
"If the government does not implement the July Charter based on the referendum, we will be forced to move from a mass movement to a mass uprising.”
He, however, did not announce any further programmes to this end.
Terming the government's constitutional reform efforts a “farce”, Nahid, also the opposition chief whip, said people would not accept such moves.
