A Dhaka court on Wednesday set 27 August for the submission of the investigation report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, marking the 128th extension of the deadline.

The report was due to be submitted today, but the investigation officer failed to do so. Allowing a prosecution plea for more time, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam fixed the new date.

Sagar and Runi were found murdered at their rented flat in West Rajabazar in Dhaka on 11 February 2012, while their four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh, was in the apartment.

Runi's brother, Nawser Alam, filed the murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The investigation was initially assigned to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police before being transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Over the following 12 years, RAB obtained 111 extensions but failed to submit the investigation report.

On 30 September 2024, the High Court removed RAB from the investigation and directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a high-powered task force to probe the double murder.

In line with the order, the ministry constituted a four-member task force on 23 October 2024, with instructions to complete the investigation and submit its report within six months.

On 26 April 2026, HC granted the task force another six months to complete the investigation and file its report.
