Newly resigned President Mohammed Shahabuddin has left Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President, following his resignation on Friday.

Shahabuddin's personal assistant, Md. Sagar Hossain, said he departed Bangabhaban at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday.

“Before leaving, he bid farewell to the officers and staff with a smile,” Hossain told Daily Waadaa.

Shahabuddin will relocate to his private residence in the capital's Gulshan area.

Preparations for his departure began on Wednesday, with his household belongings being moved to the Gulshan residence.

His resignation brings his presidency to an end nearly 21 months before the scheduled expiry of his five-year term in April 2028.

The former president, whose tenure spanned three successive governments, has faced mounting political criticism in recent months. The National Citizen Party (NCP) has also called for his arrest.

Backed by the Awami League, Shahabuddin was elected unopposed and was sworn in as Bangladesh's 22nd president in April 2023.
