A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced Sitangshu Kumar Sur, former deputy governor of the Bangladesh Bank – popularly known as SK Sur Chaudhury – to three years of imprisonment for failing to submit his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Judge Ayesha Nasreen of the Special Judge Court-2 of Dhaka handed down the verdict at around 11:30am on Tuesday (July 28), ACC Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the matter to reporters.

After the announcement, SK Sur spoke in court, "Three years? Isn't the penalty for this offense supposed to be one year?" Defense lawyers present then explained the details of the sentence to him. He was then escorted out of the courtroom before being sent to prison.

Earlier in the day, around 9:30am, SK Sur was brought to the court premises from the Keraniganj Central Jail and placed in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court lockup.

He was taken to the courtroom dock at around 10:45am ahead of the verdict. Following the judgment, he was remanded back to custody with a conviction warrant.

On July 15, the court set today's date for pronouncing the judgment after both the prosecution and the defense concluded their closing arguments.

According to the case details, the ACC filed the lawsuit against SK Sur Chaudhury on December 23, 2024. The anti-graft watchdog submitted the charge sheet on August 4, 2025, and the court officially framed charges to initiate the trial on November 6, 2025.

During the trial proceedings, the court recorded testimony from seven prosecution witnesses.

Case records indicate that the ACC had issued a notice ordering SK Sur Chaudhury to submit a statement detailing his and his dependents' assets within 21 working days following allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.

As he failed to submit the required statement within the stipulated timeframe, the ACC arrested him from the Segunbagicha area in the capital on January 14, 2025. He has remained in custody ever since.
