An alleged member of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Mohammad Zubayer, 34, was killed after being shot by unidentified gunmen at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.
The deceased was the son of Rahmat Ullah and a resident of H-29 Block in Camp-8 West.
The 14 Armed Police Battalion (APBn) has arrested two suspects in connection with the incident. However, the force said their identities would be disclosed later in the interest of the investigation.
The incident was confirmed by Mohammad Siraj Amin, Commanding Officer (Additional Deputy Inspector General) of the 14 APBn, which is responsible for law enforcement in the Rohingya camps.
According to him, the shooting took place at around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday (July 30) in H-29 Block of Camp-8 West, under the jurisdiction of the Kutupalong Madhurchhara Irani Pahar Police Camp.
He said that while Zubayer was walking from his home to a mosque, he reached the front of a house belonging to a man named Ibrahim when several unidentified armed assailants opened fire on him, shooting at least five rounds. He sustained critical injuries.
"Local residents rescued the wounded Zubayer and were taking him to the medical centre in Camp-8 West, but he died on the way," Siraj Amin said.
"After receiving information about the incident, police quickly reached the scene, brought the law and order situation under control, and launched an operation to identify and arrest those involved. Two suspects have been arrested. Their identities will be disclosed later in the interest of the investigation."
He added that preliminary intelligence suggests the killing may have stemmed from internal disputes and factional divisions between the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO).
"Additionally, the victim's presence at the location during the pre-dawn hours appears suspicious. The matter is being investigated with due importance," he said.
The APBn official added that operations are continuing to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the killing.
