Five Rohingya refugees were sentenced to one week of simple imprisonment after being caught allegedly gambling online during a raid at the Unchiprang Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, on Thursday.

Members of the 16 Armed Police Battalion (APBn) conducted the operation between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in several blocks of Camp-22 at Unchiprang, acting on a tip-off.

According to the APBn, officers led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Sheikh Md. Ziaul Islam caught the five refugees red-handed while they were allegedly using mobile phones to play online gambling games.

The detainees were taken to the Camp-in-Charge (CiC) office, where Executive Magistrate and CiC Md. Rony Alam Nur tried them in a mobile court and sentenced each to one week of simple imprisonment under Section 3 of the Bengal Public Gambling Act, 1867. They were later sent to Teknaf Model Police Station to serve their sentences.

The convicted men were identified as Osman, 27, Zahid, 31, Jamal, 29, Chhaiyadul Amin, 20, and Mohammad Ayub, 28. All are residents of the Unchiprang Rohingya camp.

The 16 APBn said separate mobile court cases had been filed against the five.

APBn Commanding Officer (Additional DIG) Md. Kawsar Sikder said security forces were continuing regular drives in the Rohingya camps to maintain law and order and crack down on crimes, including online gambling, warning that offenders would face legal action.
