The government has formed a three-member high-level committee, headed by the home minister, to review the country's existing laws governing building construction and urban development in the capital and recommend measures to make them more modern and effective.

The Cabinet Division's Committee Affairs Branch issued a notification to this effect on Wednesday.

According to the notification, the committee has been tasked with reviewing the Building Construction Act, 1952 and the Town Improvement Act, 1953, and recommending necessary amendments and revisions to strengthen the legal framework for enforcing building regulations in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area.

The committee will be chaired by the home minister, with the ministers for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, and housing and public works serving as members.

The notification said the committee may co-opt additional members, if necessary, while meetings will be convened as required. The Ministry of Housing and Public Works will provide secretarial support to the committee.

It also said that proposed amendments to the relevant laws and regulations, based on the committee's recommendations, will be placed before the Cabinet for approval.
