A Dhaka court on Thursday showed former Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah arrested in a case filed over the attempted murder of Mustain Billah Sabbir during the 2024 July Mass Uprising in the capital's Uttara area.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order after police produced Kalimullah before the court and sought to show him arrested in the case. The court subsequently ordered that he be sent back to jail.

The application to show Kalimullah arrested was filed on July 28 by the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Abu Sayed of Uttara West Police Station. The court had fixed Thursday for the hearing in the presence of the accused.

According to the case statement, Sabbir was participating in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on July 19, 2024. At around that afternoon, while he was on Rabindra Sarani Road in Uttara, the accused allegedly opened indiscriminate fire with deadly weapons and firearms on protesting students and members of the public.

During the attack, Sabbir sustained a gunshot wound to his left elbow, leaving him seriously injured. Several others were also hit by bullets in the incident.

Local residents rescued Sabbir and took him to Uttara High Care General Hospital. He was later transferred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) for advanced treatment.

Sabbir filed the attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station on October 14, 2025.

Prof Kalimullah was arrested from his residence in Mohammadpur on August 7, 2025, and has remained in jail since then.
