Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan on Friday said strict legal action would be taken against unfit vehicles and unlicensed or unskilled drivers in coordination with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) following the death of a DNCC sanitation worker in a road accident.

He made the remarks while visiting the home of conservancy worker Shefali Begum, who was killed while on duty in the Madhya Badda area of the capital earlier in the day.

According to DNCC, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the authorities to immediately visit the residence of the deceased after learning of the incident.

Following the directive, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahammad Sohel Monzoor and the DNCC administrator visited the victim's family.

Safiqul said action would also be taken if any investigation found that DNCC vehicles had been driven by unskilled personnel or by helpers without proper authorisation.

He said conservancy workers serve day and night to keep the city clean and urged all road users to ensure their safety while they perform their duties.

The DNCC announced financial assistance of 400,000 taka for Shefali's family, along with one year's salary.

Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, the administrator urged motorists to drive responsibly and avoid reckless behaviour to help prevent road accidents.

DNCC Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir and other officials were present during the visit.
