A tourist from Khulna died after falling into the Bay of Bengal while parasailing at Cox's Bazar on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Akshar Shouvik Roy, who had travelled to Cox's Bazar with a group of nine friends.

The accident occurred around noon at the Darianagar area along Marine Drive.

According to the local authorities and witnesses, the rope attached to the parasailing equipment snapped during the ride, causing Roy to fall into the sea.

He was rescued and taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mohammad Ali confirmed the death to The Business Standard newspaper, saying police had visited the scene and launched an investigation.

Shouvik had been lifted around 300 to 400 feet into the air before falling into the water. Resident Medical Officer Dr Subaktagin Mohammad Sohel told the media that the victim was brought to the hospital at around 2:10 pm with no signs of life, adding that the preliminary assessment suggested death by drowning, pending an autopsy.

The tragedy has once again raised questions over parasailing safety in Cox's Bazar. The Business Standard reported that at least 10 tourists have been injured in incidents involving the same operator over the past two years. Daily Waadaa however couldn’t verify the claim independently.

Vernacular Bonik Barta newspaper meanwhile said authorities are also examining allegations that the company continued operating despite a recent weather-related administrative restriction.
