The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Monday backtracked on its warning of legal action within hours of alleging that some individuals and groups had been spreading propaganda about unusually high electricity bills in recent months.

“Therefore, all those concerned are requested to act more responsibly in this regard,” the ministry said in the same Facebook post, replacing the earlier warning that anyone found spreading false information about excessive electricity bills without evidence would face “strict legal action.”

According to the Facebook post, all complaints received so far regarding excessive electricity bills have already been addressed by the Power Division and the relevant electricity distribution agencies.

It urged customers with complaints to submit applications along with supporting evidence to the relevant authorities.

“Appropriate and effective action will be taken in response to such complaints,” the post said.

In recent months, customers across different parts of the country have reported receiving unusually high electricity bills.

Some consumers claim that their electricity bills have surged significantly despite frequent load-shedding and without the installation of any new electrical appliances.
