Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested former Gazipur-5 Member of Parliament (MP) Akhtaruzzaman from the capital's Gulshan area tonight.

According to a DMP press release, Akhtaruzzaman was arrested during a raid at a residence in Gulshan at around 10:00pm on Wednesday.

Police said he was detained on allegations of involvement in the activities of a banned organization. 

He is also accused in multiple criminal cases, including murder.

The DB said legal proceedings against the former lawmaker are underway.
