The floating LNG terminal operated by Excelerate Energy at Maheshkhali resumed operations on Wednesday after remaining out of service for nearly two weeks due to a technical fault, bringing relief to the country's strained gas supply.

Petrobangla Member (Operation) Dr Rafiqul Islam said the Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) resumed gas supply, with around 115 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) being injected into the national grid on Wednesday.

He said gas supply from the terminal is expected to increase to 750-800 mmcfd by Wednesday night as operations gradually return to full capacity.

The gas shortage began on July 21, when LNG imports through the Excelerate-operated terminal were suspended following a technical malfunction.

The disruption sharply reduced the country's LNG regasification capacity, as Bangladesh has been relying on only one operational FSRU after another terminal went out of service earlier.

Petrobangla officials said another LNG cargo has already arrived in Bangladeshi waters and is scheduled to begin unloading on Friday, which will further strengthen gas supplies to the national grid.
