Dhaka film actor Mohammad Ashraful Haque Don, known for villain roles, has been sent to jail in the Salman Shah murder case after his arrest at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia for Umrah. He is among 11 accused in the case, which was filed nearly three decades after the popular actor’s controversial death.
Dhaka film actor and villain Mohammad Ashraful Haque Don has been sent to jail in the murder case of popular actor Salman Shah.
Don was produced before a court following his arrest and was sent to jail after a hearing.
He was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Sunday morning while preparing to travel to Saudi Arabia.
Dhaka’s Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Jannatul Ferdous Ibn Haque issued the order.
Court prosecutor Shah Alam told Daily Waadaa that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Don in connection with the Salman Shah murder case. His name was also on the immigration authorities’ stop list.
Don arrived at the airport at around 6am to travel to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. He was subsequently arrested by the CID.
State lawyer Shamsuddoha Sumon said Don was brought before the court at around 3:45pm and was sent to jail following the hearing.
Don is among the 11 accused named in the murder case. A court imposed a travel ban on all 11 accused last year.
Twenty-nine years after Salman's death, a court last year ordered that a murder case be initiated over his death.
According to court records, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) had conducted a lengthy investigation into the circumstances surrounding Salman's death after the case had been investigated by several agencies.
The PBI concluded in its report that Salman had died by suicide. However, his family and fans did not accept the finding.
Subsequently, on October 21 last year, his maternal uncle Mohammad Alamgir filed a murder case with Ramna Police Station in Dhaka. The case named 11 people as accused, including Salman's former wife Samira Haque and actor Don, who was known for playing villainous roles.
Although questions surrounding the actual cause of Salman's death persisted for years, no effective steps were taken to pursue a murder investigation.
The case is currently being investigated by the CID.
