David Emon placed on 5-day remand in extortion case

A court in Chattogram on Wednesday placed alleged top criminal Mobarak Hossain Emon, known as David Emon, on a five-day remand in a case filed over an attack on an under-construction building and a cocktail explosion following a demand for 50 lakh taka in extortion from a businessman in Hathazari upazila.

Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim granted the remand after a hearing, said Additional Police Super Kazi Md Tareq Aziz.

Police sought the remand in connection with the attack and cocktail explosion at a businessman's under-construction building in the Baradighir Par area of Hathazari after the businessman allegedly refused to pay the demanded extortion money.

According to police and court sources, the attack and explosion took place at the under-construction building owned by businessman Jashim Uddin in July. He later filed a case with Hathazari police station.

Emon was produced before the court under tight security on Wednesday morning. Security was also reinforced around the court premises.

Earlier, police arrested him from the Kotwali area of Jashore on July 29. Based on information obtained from him, police conducted an operation in Fatikchhari the following day and recovered a foreign-made pistol and a locally made firearm.

He was produced before a court the day after his arrest and shown arrested in a murder case and an arms case filed with Fatikchhari police station. The court later granted a total of 10 days' remand in the two cases for interrogation.

Emon faces at least 15 cases filed with different police stations in Chattogram Metropolitan and district areas, including cases involving murder, arms possession and extortion.
