Police arrested two people, including a senior official of Agrani Bank, in a case filed over 4.38 crore taka allegedly missing from the vault of its Laldighi East Corporate Branch in Chattogram.

The arrestees are Md Kamrul Hossain, 41, senior officer and cash in-charge of the branch, and Md Jafrullah Tanvir, 25.

They were arrested after the bank authorities filed a case with Kotwali Police Station. Bank General Manager Mostak Ahmed filed the case, naming Kamrul and Jafrullah as accused along with several unidentified others.

According to the case statement, Kamrul was responsible for the branch’s cash and vault.

A discrepancy was detected on August 9 when officials were reconciling the day’s cash transactions with the money kept in the vault after regular banking operations.

A subsequent review of the accounts, vault records and relevant documents revealed a shortage of 4.38 crore taka.

When questioned about the missing money, Kamrul allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.

The bank alleged that Kamrul, with the assistance of Jafrullah and several unidentified others, removed the money from the vault.

Inspector (Investigation) Md Iqbal Hossain of Kotwali Police Station, who is investigating the case, said the two named accused were arrested.

A court later sent them to jail, he said.

Police also seized two mobile phones from the accused, along with a 64GB pen drive containing WhatsApp communications and screen recordings, according to the investigation officer.

The bank authorities said the missing money had been deposited by different customers.
