Annie to take charge of home ministry, Salahuddin gets local government

Staff Correspondent

Following the announcement of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the BNP’s nominee for presidential candidate, changes are also being made in the ministries.

Salahuddin Ahmed is being removed from the Ministry of Home Affairs and assigned to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie is being given charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The decision was reportedly taken at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday.

Ministry sources confirmed the matter, saying a gazette notification on the changes may be issued in the evening.

Salahuddin is a politician and lawyer who has been serving as the Minister of Home Affairs and Member of Parliament from Cox's Bazar-1 constituency since February 2026.

He previously served as the state minister for communications and as a member of parliament from 1996 to 2006.

Annie is a member of parliament representing the Lakshmipur-3 constituency, and currently serves as the Minister of Water Resources.

The development comes in light of Fakhrul resigning as BNP Secretary General and Local Government and Rural Development Minister after being formally nominated as the party’s candidate for the presidential election.
