Following its successful implementation in Dhaka, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based camera system for traffic management is set to be introduced on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway.
The initiative will become operational on August 18, marking the first such initiative on a highway in the country.
The Traffic Department has already installed AI cameras at key locations along the highway and completed preliminary trials.
Stakeholders are optimistic that the system will encourage compliance with traffic rules, promote orderly traffic flow and help reduce road accidents.
Officials from the Traffic Department told BSS that under the system, traffic violations will be detected automatically and fines will be imposed in accordance with existing laws. Violations such as speeding, unauthorised parking and driving on the wrong side of the road will automatically trigger fines, they said.
"This system is being launched to ensure public safety on the highway, strengthen traffic discipline and establish an efficient, technology-driven mechanism to deal with vehicles violating traffic rules," they added.
