Mirza Fakhrul’s parliamentary seat declared vacant

The Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat held by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been declared vacant following his assumption of office as President of Bangladesh.

A gazette notification issued on Saturday (August 22), signed by Parliament Secretariat Legislative Support Wing Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, said Fakhrul assumed the presidency on Friday (August 21), making the seat vacant from that date under Article 50(4) of the Constitution.

The notification has been sent to the Government Press for publication in an extra issue of the Bangladesh Gazette.

A copy has also been sent to the Election Commission Secretariat to take necessary steps to arrange a by-election in the constituency.
