Bangladesh customs intelligence has seized three luxury cars from the parking lot of an upscale hotel in the southeastern tourist city of Cox’s Bazar over suspected duty evasion and fraudulent import documents, officials said Friday.

A team from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate raided the parking area of Hotel Ocean Paradise at around 3 a.m. and seized the vehicles after receiving a tip-off, Rezvi Ahmed, additional director general of the directorate’s Chattogram regional office, told a press briefing later Friday.

Officials said the people using the vehicles were asked to produce import documents and valid purchase papers but failed to do so.

The seized vehicles are a red 2021 Toyota bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-Ga-30-1224, a red Honda registered as Dhaka Metro-Ga-18-9668 and a twin-grey 2020 Mazda bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-Ga-24-7399.

All three vehicles were manufactured in Japan.

Ahmed said investigators were examining whether the cars had entered Bangladesh through customs duty evasion, false declarations, fraudulent documentation or smuggling.

Customs intelligence is also verifying records relating to the vehicles’ import and ownership.

Officials said legal action would be taken against those involved if irregularities are established during the investigation.
