A 20-year-old Bangladeshi man was killed in firing by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the border in Habiganj district on Sunday, according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The victim, identified as Sohag Mia, was shot near the Chimtibil border in Ahmadabad Union of Chunarughat upazila around noon, said Lt Col Md Tanzilur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB’s Habiganj 55 Battalion.

Sohag was the son of Shafik Mia, a resident of the border area.

His uncle, Abdul Kadir, said Sohag had gone to the border area in the morning to tend cattle when BSF personnel suddenly opened fire on him.

Family members began searching for him after learning about the shooting and later recovered him from the border area.

Sohag was taken to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

BGB and police sources said residents near the Chimtibil border heard gunshots at around 12:30 pm and later learned that a person was lying on the ground near the border.

The person was initially believed to be a Bangladeshi national based on his clothing.

Lt Col Tanzilur said BGB personnel visited the scene immediately after the incident.

The body was handed over to police and will be returned to Sohag’s family after the completion of legal procedures.
