A court on Tuesday deferred the pronouncement of judgment in a case filed over corruption in the construction of Rana Plaza and fixed October 6 to hear the prosecution and defence arguments afresh.

The judgment in the case was set to be pronounced today. Dhaka Divisional Special Judge BM Tarikul Kabir, however, withdrew the case from the judgment stage and fixed October 6 for fresh arguments, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) public prosecutor Ishtiak Ahmed told BSS.

According to the case documents, 1,136 people were killed and more than 1,500 others injured when Rana Plaza near Savar bus stand collapsed on April 24, 2013.

Following the incident, the ACC launched an investigation into corruption in the construction of the building.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director SM Mofidul Islam filed the case with Savar Police Station on June 15, 2014, against 17 people for constructing the building in violation of the approved design.

As the building was in the name of Sohel Rana's father, Rana was initially not named in the case. He was later included as an accused after the investigation found him to be the main person responsible for overseeing the building.

On February 23, 2017, a further investigation report was submitted for the third time, naming 18 people, including Sohel Rana and his parents, as accused. On May 21, 2017, the court framed charges against 10 people, including Rana, while discharging eight others.

Of the 20 prosecution witnesses, 19 testified before the court during the trial.
