Police sought information from Interpol about the whereabouts of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed following media reports that he travelled to Saint Lucia after being released from custody in Dubai.

“We sought Interpol’s assistance through an email on Wednesday, seeking information about Benazir Ahmed’s current location following a media report,” Additional Inspector General of Police (Crime and Operations) Khondoker Rafiqul Islam told BSS by phone on Thursday.

Benazir, an accused in a case over crimes against humanity, reportedly travelled from Dubai to Saint Lucia on August 17.

A Dubai court had earlier granted him conditional bail on July 27 following hearings on extradition documents submitted by Bangladesh.

He was released on July 30 after completing the required legal procedures.

The government has meanwhile been pursuing efforts to bring Benazir back to Bangladesh.
