A Gazipur court has sent college student Sifat Abdullah to jail after police filed a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act following his arrest over a Facebook video in which he criticised the BNP government and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman over soaring electricity bills.

Sifat was produced before the Gazipur Metropolitan Court on Friday, which ordered that he be sent to jail.

Abdul Awal, investigation officer of Gacha police station, confirmed the matter to Daily Waadaa.

Earlier, police filed a case under Anti-Terrorism Act against Sifat at the same police station.

“He was trying to organise a flash procession with the fascist forces,” Golam Rabbani, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gacha police station told Waadaa.

However, police had earlier said Sifat had been arrested over allegations of making derogatory remarks about the prime minister and the government.

Sifat, a student of Adamjee Cantonment College, was arrested from his home on Thursday night after a one-minute video of him went viral on social media.

In the video, Sifat complained about what he described as unusually high electricity bills and complained that he had been charged around 4,000 taka and 5,000 taka in the past two months. He also used abusive language while criticising the BNP government.
