Sammilita Islami Oikya Jote has condemned a newly passed law as “contrary to the Quran,” accusing the BNP government of breaking its pre-election pledge not to enact legislation conflicting with the Quran and Sunnah.

In a joint statement, the alliance’s chairman Advocate Khairul Ahsan and Secretary General Maulana Harisul Haque questioned why the government had allowed the legislation to pass parliament.

“We fail to understand on whose advice and on what grounds they passed a law in parliament that clearly deviates from provisions laid down in the Quran,” they said.

The leaders said their alliance had supported the BNP because of its commitment not to enact what they described as “anti-Islamic” legislation.

“But they are not keeping their word,” the statement said.

The alliance demanded that the government urgently amend the legislation and restore the previous law, arguing that the measure was unacceptable in a Muslim-majority country.

It also urged Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to investigate whether officials it described as “atheists” or “associates of fascists” were working around him and take action against them.

The group warned that failure to amend the law could expose the prime minister to the “wrath of the Tawhidi masses.”

The statement did not identify the legislation by name or specify which provisions it considered contrary to the Quran.
