Police rescued a hawker unharmed in Ukhiya on Sunday after he was allegedly abducted and held near a Rohingya camp for a 10 lakh taka ransom.

Mohammad Ibrahim was forced into a Hiace microbus by several unidentified men near the Technical School in Rajapalong Union at around 9 pm on Saturday, according to Ukhiya police.

The abductors allegedly took him to the Shafiullah Kata area of Rohingya Camp 16 and later used Ibrahim’s mobile phone to call his elder brother, Abdul Halim, demanding 10 lakh taka for his release.

Ibrahim’s cousin, Md Sharif, subsequently filed a general diary with Ukhiya Police Station over his disappearance.

Police said they traced the victim using information technology and launched a search operation led by the officer-in-charge of Ukhiya Police Station.

A team, including Sub-Inspector Unumong Marma and Assistant Sub-Inspector Delwar Hossain, conducted raids in several areas from Sunday morning.

The abductors apparently became aware of the police operation and abandoned Ibrahim before fleeing, police said.

Officers later found Ibrahim unharmed in the Moshar Khola area. No ransom was paid.

Police said an operation was underway to identify and arrest the suspected abductors.
