The Dhaka-Chattogram highway is set for major transformation through technology-driven traffic management and new infrastructure aimed at reducing accidents and congestion.
The initiatives include 24-hour surveillance through AI-powered cameras, an automated fine system, construction of overpasses and underpasses, and a long-term plan to upgrade the highway to 10 lanes.
AI-powered cameras and an "auto fine" system were launched on August 18 to detect traffic law violations along around 250 kilometres of the highway, from Signboard in Jatrabari to Chittagong City Gate.
A total of 1,427 AI cameras are planned at 490 points. The system detects speeding, failure to maintain designated lanes, dangerous overtaking, driving on the wrong side and illegal parking.
State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Habibur Rashid Habib said the government is giving equal importance to road expansion, modern technology, traffic discipline and necessary infrastructure.
He said the AI camera and auto fine system had ushered in a new era in traffic-law enforcement and would encourage drivers to follow the law, helping reduce accidents.
Within the first 24 hours of launching the system, 449 cases were filed and fines totalling Tk 15.51 lakh were imposed, with speeding accounting for the highest number of violations.
Following a violation, SMS notifications and fine notices are sent to the registered vehicle owner. Fines can also be paid through mobile financial services.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Mohammad Habibur Rahman said the high number of violations detected initially was normal, adding that regular surveillance would increase awareness and gradually reduce violations.
He said the system would also improve transparency and accountability in traffic enforcement.
A feasibility study is underway to upgrade the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to 10 lanes, including three additional underpasses, as traffic pressure continues to rise between the country's two major commercial centres-Dhaka and Chattogram (formerly Chittagong).
At Paduar Bazar, a major congestion-prone area, authorities have prepared a design to expand the existing overpass and plan to complete the work by adjusting the existing budget.
The government also plans to construct five underpasses in Paduar Bazar and adjoining areas to reduce congestion and accidents.
Roads and Highways Department Chief Engineer Md Moniruzzaman said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed that the 232-kilometre Dhaka-Chattogram highway be converted into an elevated expressway.
He said the design has already been completed and a Development Project Proposal (DPP) will be prepared once financing is confirmed.
