Police have arrested 40 more people in connection with a flash procession brought out by leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations in Dhaka’s Gulshan, taking the total number of arrests to 74.

The latest arrests were made from different parts of the capital on Saturday night, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the matter to Daily Waadaa.

Earlier on Saturday, the DMP said 32 people had been arrested for allegedly taking part in the procession.

The procession was brought out under the banner of the Awami League in Gulshan-1 around noon on Friday.

According to police, activists attempted to bring out the procession from in front of Bhola Mosque in Gulshan-1 at around 11:45am. When police approached, the participants allegedly threw cocktails and fled the scene.

Police fired two rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the procession, officials said.

Two people, Md Arafat, 20, and Abdul Rahim, 49, were arrested from the scene, according to police and media reports.

A video circulated on social media shows several hundred people taking part in the procession and chanting “Joy Bangla.”
