The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to investigate fresh allegations of corruption, irregularities, embezzlement and money laundering against former interim government adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan.

ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Tanzir Ahmed told journalists on Sunday that the new allegations would be incorporated into an ongoing inquiry against the former adviser.

According to the allegations submitted to the ACC, Asif Mahmud allegedly took money in connection with the appointment of an administrator to Dhaka North City Corporation, posting of deputy commissioners, tenders for development projects under different city corporations and the Local Government Division, as well as recruitment, transfers and promotions.

He has also been accused of embezzling money by inflating the costs of projects involving rural infrastructure development, bridge construction, the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant and Sheikh Russell Mini Stadium.

The allegations further claim that Asif Mahmud siphoned a large amount of money abroad and built assets in Portugal, Dubai, Singapore and Australia. He is also alleged to have assets or funds in Swiss banks.

The complaint also names his father, an assistant private secretary (APS) and a personal officer (PO), accusing them of controlling contractor syndicates, lobbying for bribe transactions and abusing their positions.

Asked about the new allegations, ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Tanzir Ahmed said they would be investigated alongside the existing inquiry.

“A new complaint has been received. It will be incorporated into our ongoing inquiry. As you know, an inquiry into an allegation is already underway. These allegations will also be investigated as part of that inquiry,” he said.

Earlier, on September 2, the ACC launched an inquiry against Asif Mahmud and three others over allegations of irregularities and corruption in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
