A Saudi Arabia expatriate who suffered burns after allegedly setting himself on fire following a family dispute at Sutrapur in the capital died on Sunday.

Mohammad Emon, 26, breathed his last at the ICU of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery around 11:50am, said Dr Md Sultan Mahmud, resident surgeon of the institute.

The incident occurred around 4:30pm Saturday at Shyambazar Chamartuli of Sutrapur when four other members of his family suffered burn wounds.

The injured were identified as Emon’s father Siddiq Bepari, 60; his nephew Rajib, 38, a mechanic at National Hospital; nephew Arifur Rahman Dhalu, an electrician35 and niece Tania Akter, 20, an honours student at a women’s college in Old Dhaka.

According to locals and family sources, the injured people live in adjacent houses on their ancestral property in the area.

Sonia Akter, wife of Arifur Rahman Dhalu, said an argument broke out between Emon’s sister Sultana and Tania on Friday over stagnant dirty water in front of their houses.

Tania asked Sultana to clean the water, following which Sultana informed her brother Emon, who was in Saudi Arabia. Emon returned home after learning about the dispute, Sonia said.

She said Emon threatened to kill everyone and himself before pouring petrol inside his room and setting it on fire, leaving all five people injured.

Tania suffered burns to 60 percent of her body, Siddiq 35 percent, Rajib 15 percent and Arifur 8 percent, said Dr Sultan Mahmud.

Emon, Tania, Siddiq and Rajib were shifted to the ICU due to the severity of their burns.
