A Tangail court on Monday sentenced three people to death and four others to life imprisonment for killing former Dainna Union Parishad chairman Rafiqul Islam Faruk in Tangail Sadar upazila in 2013.

Tangail Additional Sessions Judge Md Foysal Al Mamun pronounced the verdict.

The condemned convicts are Saniat Khan Bappa, 30, then vice-president of the Chhatra League, Md Azad, 25, son of Afzal Fakir, and Shahjahan Mia, 31, son of Shaheed Mia, all from Dainna union.

The court also fined each of them 1 lakh taka.

The four people sentenced to life imprisonment are Md Sujon, 32, Sanwar Hossain, 34, Shafiqul Islam Shafik, 25, and Rujbel alias Emon, 25. Shafik and Rujbel were tried in absentia.

The court fined each of them 50,000 taka, in default of which they will have to serve an additional year in jail.

The court acquitted Sanjit Ghosh as the allegations against him could not be proved.

According to the prosecution, Rafiqul Islam Faruk, vice-president of the Tangail Sadar upazila BNP and former UP chairman, was shot and stabbed to death on December 13, 2013.

His younger brother, Lavlu Mia, filed a case with Tangail Sadar Police Station following the killing.

Ashok Kumar Singha, then a DB inspector and also the investigating officer in the case, submitted a charge sheet against eight people on August 13, 2015.
