A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent to jail Maksuda Islam, first wife of Member of Parliament (MP) from Satkhira-4 constituency Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, in a case filed over allegedly abetting his second wife, Mariam Khatun, to die of suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order as police produced Maksuda before the court after the end of her one day remand and pleaded to keep her behind bars till the end of the probe in the case.

Maksuda was placed on one day remand, while Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam was on a four-day remand in the case on September 21.

Police recovered Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban in the evening of September 20.

The Satkhira-4 lawmaker and his first wife were taken into custody after that.

Mariam's father SM Masum Billah filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the morning of September 21 against Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman for allegedly abetting her suicide.
