Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan has directed authorities to take prompt and effective measures to address traffic congestion, dengue outbreaks and waterlogging in the capital.

The minister issued the directive on Wednesday during a review meeting at the Local Government Division's conference room in the Secretariat, where officials assessed progress on Dhaka's cleanliness drive, dengue prevention efforts, traffic decongestion, canal excavation, and the broader push to build a safe and sustainable capital.

Speaking at the meeting, Khan stressed that ensuring smooth mobility in large cities was critically important, noting that time lost by commuters stuck in traffic carries significant economic costs. He called for effective initiatives to keep the city's movement flowing normally for residents.

On dengue prevention, the minister said the prime minister had already launched a programme on the issue and placed emphasis on cleanliness campaigns. He urged that ongoing anti-dengue efforts be strengthened further alongside regular cleanliness operations.

Directing all relevant agencies to act swiftly, Khan said everyone involved must work in a coordinated manner to implement the issues discussed at the meeting, particularly by reviewing progress on the prime minister's dengue prevention programme and taking necessary follow-up steps.

State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, also present at the meeting, said the ongoing work of the city corporations needed to be intensified further to transform Dhaka into a clean, safe and liveable city. He placed particular emphasis on cleanliness drives to prevent dengue and on conducting regular operations to destroy Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

The meeting reviewed ongoing initiatives across cleanliness, dengue prevention, traffic decongestion, canal excavation, waterlogging removal, and efforts to build a safer, more sustainable Dhaka. The minister and state minister expressed satisfaction with the progress shown by the Dhaka North and South City Corporations.

Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation Md Shafiqul Islam Khan and Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation Md Abdus Salam, along with other relevant officials, presented updates on the corporations' ongoing activities.

Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan and other officials from the ministry and both city corporations also attended the meeting.
