The water level of the Teesta River has risen significantly due to heavy rainfall over the past two days and an onrush of water from upstream, sparking fears of short-term flooding in low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat district.

According to the Water Development Board (WDB), water flow at the Teesta Barrage's Dalia point in Hatibandha upazila was recorded at 52.11 meters at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, flowing four centimeters below the danger mark of 52.15 meters.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) indicated that the river's water level may reach the warning threshold in several northern districts, including Lalmonirhat, over the next 24 to 48 hours, potentially inundating adjacent low-lying areas temporarily.

Sunil Kumar, Executive Engineer of Lalmonirhat WDB, said water levels are expected to rise further over the next day or two, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

Local residents, including Abdur Rashid of Gobordhan Char, expressed concern over potential late-September flooding, which historically inflicts severe hardship on riverbank communities.
