A court on Monday sent Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam to jail after the end of his second round of remand in a case filed over allegations that he abetted the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after police produced Nazrul before the court and sought his detention in jail until completion of the investigation. The court also rejected his bail petition.

On September 24, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain placed Nazrul on a fresh four-day remand. Earlier, his first wife, Maksuda Islam, was placed on one-day remand on September 21. Another accused, Obaidur Rahman, was sent to jail on September 23.

Police recovered Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban on the evening of September 20. Nazrul and Maksuda were taken into custody following the incident.

Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman, accusing them of abetting her suicide.

According to the case documents, Mariam, 19, married Nazrul in June 2026 at the "direct instigation" of Obaidur Rahman. She had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat No. 203 of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The case statement alleges that Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had been physically and mentally torturing her over various issues since the marriage.

At around 5:30pm on September 20, Nazrul called Masum Billah and asked him to go to the flat immediately. When he arrived, Masum found Mariam hanging by her neck, according to the case documents.

The statement also said the family found a suicide note written by Mariam on her bed while recovering her body.
