Organisational action not enough, legal punishment needed: Shafiqur on Radda attack

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Thursday said organisational action against those linked to the attack on the RADDA MCH-FP Centre was not enough, calling for legal proceedings and punishment for those responsible.

He called for legal action and strict punishment after the BNP asked its reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti to resign from parliament over the incident.

In a Facebook post, Shafiqur said the government and ruling party had finally been compelled to take organisational measures over the incident.

“The people want to see visible and credible legal action,” he said.

Shafiqur also called on the government to take responsibility for sustainably rebuilding the health centre, which was attacked, looted and demolished in Mirpur-1 on September 25.

His remarks came after the BNP took organisational action against Mishti and asked her to resign from parliament over the incident. Mishti has denied involvement, while an investigation into allegations concerning her role is ongoing.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday that investigators were examining allegations involving a lawmaker and that action would be taken if the person’s involvement was established.

The RADDA MCH-FP Centre was attacked and demolished on September 25 after a large group allegedly entered the premises, looted medicines and medical equipment and used heavy machinery to demolish parts of the facility. Police have arrested several people in connection with the incident, while the officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station was withdrawn following allegations of police negligence.

Shafiqur had earlier visited the damaged centre and announced 50 lakh taka in assistance for its reconstruction and the resumption of healthcare services.
