Staff Correspondent

The Special Response Battalion (SRB)-2 on Monday detained Mizanur Rahman Swapan, president of the Ward 28 unit of the BNP, from the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar over extortion allegations.

He was later handed over to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police.

Police told the media that a case was being filed.

SRB officials said allegations of extortion had been levelled against Swapan in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur areas.

Swapan was on the police list of extortionists, officials said.

He allegedly operated an ambulance syndicate at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, while his extortion racket involved collecting money from garment factories and roadside vendors in Agargaon, as well as monthly payments from drug traders.
