A court in Dhaka on Monday sent Obaidur Rahman, maternal uncle of Mariam Khatun, to jail after the end of his four-day remand in a case filed over allegedly abetting his niece’s suicide.

Mariam, 19, was the second wife of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after police produced Obaidur before the court and sought his detention in jail until the investigation is completed.

Earlier on October 1, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Repon Hossain placed Obaidur on a four-day remand in the case.

The courts have so far granted two remands for prime accused Gazi Nazrul, while his first wife Maksuda Islam was placed on one-day remand.

Police recovered Mariam’s body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban on the evening of September 20. Nazrul and Maksuda were taken into custody following the incident.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on September 21 against Nazrul, Maksuda and Obaidur, accusing them of abetting her suicide.

According to the case documents, Mariam married Nazrul in June 2026 under the “direct instigation” of Obaidur. She had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at the flat in NAM Bhaban, opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The case documents say Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had subjected her to physical and mental torture over various issues since the marriage.
