M Ghaziul Haque, chairman of MGH Group and a veteran business leader whose career spanned shipping, logistics and banking in Bangladesh, died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Monday. He was 92.

Haque died at 1:10pm on Monday (October 5, 2026), according to a statement from MGH Group announcing his death. His namaz-e-janaza will be held at Azad Mosque in Gulshan after Maghrib prayers.

Born in 1934, Haque belonged to a generation of Bangladeshi business leaders who built their careers in the trading and shipping sector before independence and later helped establish the shipping infrastructure in the country, fostering collaboration between local businesses and international companies.

He graduated from Chittagong Government College, then enrolled in the University of Dhaka in 1955, beginning his career the same year with British company Bird & Co Ltd. He rose through its ranks and became managing director in 1976, when the business operated as Birds Bangladesh Ltd.

In 1980, Haque left the company to become an entrepreneur, joining Chattogram-based shipping company Aquamarine Ltd as a partner.

A decade later, he and his partner formed Maersk Bangladesh Ltd, a joint venture with Copenhagen-based shipping giant Maersk Line. Haque served as chairman of the venture until 1997, making him an early figure in bringing one of the world's largest shipping companies into a formal local partnership in Bangladesh.

His experience eventually extended across shipping and freight forwarding, imports and exports, marketing, banking, international business partnerships and joint ventures.

Haque was also closely associated with the development of Eastern Bank PLC.

He joined EBL's board in 1993, a year after the bank began operations following the restructuring of the former Bank of Credit and Commerce International, or BCCI, operation in Bangladesh. He became one of the bank's longest-serving directors.

Haque served two terms as EBL chairman — from 2000 to 2006 and again from 2013 to 2018. During his association with the bank, EBL emerged as one of the country's prominent private commercial lenders and was an early adopter of online and internet banking and modern card products.

His name also became attached to one of Bangladesh's most internationalised business groups.

MGH Group was founded in 1992 by his son, Anis Ahmed, who named the company after his father. Beginning as a Bangladesh-based venture, it expanded into a Singapore-headquartered multinational business. MGH today operates across 26 countries, with more than 3,500 employees and businesses spanning logistics, aviation, travel, consumer goods, healthcare, mobility, hospitality, finance and insurance.

Haque remained chairman of the group as it expanded beyond its original shipping and logistics base.

His business career therefore stretched across two distinct eras of Bangladesh's private sector: from the agency and shipping businesses that connected the country with international commerce in the decades around independence to the emergence of locally rooted conglomerates operating across multiple countries.

Haque was also involved in social and philanthropic activities during his long business career, according to profiles published by Eastern Bank.
