A mobile court in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf on Monday sentenced a 22-year-old man to 15 days in jail for allegedly using forged documents to apply for voter registration by identifying another person as his father.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Atikur Rahman handed down the sentence.

The convicted man, Nurul Aziz, is the son of Md Hafez of Daingyakata area in Whykong union of Teknaf upazila.

According to the upazila election office, Nurul listed Md Rashid as his father in his voter registration application and submitted a citizenship certificate, character certificate and birth registration document in support of his application.

Election officials detected inconsistencies in the documents during verification and questioned Nurul. Further checks established that his actual father’s name was Md Hafez.

Teknaf Upazila Election Officer Md Salauddin Al Azad said Nurul had obtained a citizenship certificate and birth registration document by identifying another person as his father before submitting his voter registration application.

“As the matter appeared suspicious, we conducted a verification and found evidence of forgery,” he said.

Executive Magistrate Mohammad Atikur Rahman said Nurul was sentenced over the alleged forgery of certificates and a birth registration document.

“Whether he is a Rohingya citizen is also being investigated,” he added.
